Difficult conversations are a common—often integral—component of an education environment.

This session will provide participants an opportunity to explore and practice specific tools to support their desired outcomes in these interactions. Participants will critically assess if and how they choose to engage, identify an approach to initiate these difficult conversations, and apply multiple methods in support of productive engagement within these conversations.

Jivanto van Hemert (he/him) serves as the Associate Ombuds. Prior to joining the Ombuds Office, Jivanto served as the Director of Case Management and COVID Response Operations in the Office of the President at Ohio University.
Jivanto holds a Master of Education Degree in College Student Personnel from Ohio University and a Master of Business Administration from Salve Regina University where he also obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Administration of Justice. Additionally, Jivanto holds a Graduate Certificate in Crisis Communications.
Jivanto has presented and published on a variety of topics related to higher education including effective campus collaborations, utilizing shared values, and trauma stewardship. A volunteer at the Dayton Mediation Center trained in transformative medication, Jivanto is also a member of the International Ombuds Association, the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation, the Ohio College Student Personal Association (OCPA), and NASPA- Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
