TILT Showcase - Reverse Engineering Rubrics With Students To Increase Transparency And Clarity In Assignment Descriptions (Workshop - Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning) #12201

Import to your Calendar
Most of us can relate to the moment of panic when you’ve been given a task and you realize you are not completely certain what your supervisor is expecting from you. Conversely, students in many courses come to expect a complete, thought-out rubric and/or template in course assignments. This workshop discusses strategies and processes to help students create their own rubrics for any assignment asked. This workshop walks participants through generating transparent assignment descriptions, including asking students to create their own rubrics using example assignments and assignment descriptions. By working together with the instructor, students create an informed assignment rubric that allows them to form their own conclusions. Reverse engineering rubrics provide students transferable skills for coping with uncertainty in the workplace, and give educators a glimpse into the ways in which students form conclusions on assignments. This workshop will feature a walkthrough of the reverse rubric process and will model additional examples that have been used in class to help students investigate expectations surrounding various workplace deliverables. Additionally, participants will have opportunities for discussion and brainstorming!

This workshop will be facilitated by Katie Powell, Assistant Professor Educator in the Rhetoric and Professional Writing Program within the College of Arts and Sciences. This workshop is part of the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) showcase highlighting instructors who have incorporated TILT into their teaching.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of allowing students to form their own conclusion about assignment expectations
  • Practice strategies that allow them to assess how they create assignment descriptions or genre expectations
  • Observe and relate to various reverse rubric activity examples; 4) Generate ideas for reverse rubric assignments in their own courses
