The First Five Minutes: Starting Your Class With Purpose (Workshop - Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning) #114452

Import to your Calendar

In this workshop, we will explore different activities aimed at setting the tone, building community, and identifying shared goals for each class session. Students often run from one activity or class to another and taking the first five minutes of class to intentionally guide students through that transition can help to build focus, engagement, and set a welcoming tone for the rest of the class. Topics will include strategies for building community, cultivating focus, and creating connections between past and future course activities. This workshop is designed to primarily address in person and synchronous courses.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the value of taking the first few minutes of class to make an intentional transition
  • Identify strategies and activities that would work well in their teaching context
  • Make a plan to implement 1-3 activities into their courses
