Experiential learning helps learners connect course content to their lived experience. Because it enhances learning retention, it is a key element in adult learning theory (also known as andragogy). However, sometimes it can be harder to envision possibilities for incorporating experiential learning in the online environment than in a face-to-face course. Part of this is because we often only think of the “big EL” examples such as study abroad, study away, and co-ops when it comes to EL. This workshop emphasizes what we call “Everyday EL,” which is not only a learning mindset that we can infuse into our students, but also an emphasis on small, everyday EL techniques that can be interwoven into online course design. After this workshop, you’ll leave with some knowledge of what EL is and practical tips for how you can incorporate “everyday EL” into your online class. Participants should be prepared to develop an example of EL for their own online course during the workshop.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the four-step Kolb cycle of experiential learning
- Articulate the importance of reflection in the experiential learning cycle
- List several options for incorporating experiential learning in the online environment
- Develop a plan to incorporate one element of experiential learning in an online course
