The University Honors Program (UHP) is partnering with the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CET&L) to host workshops for faculty interested in developing honors seminar courses.
The call for proposals to teach honors seminar courses in spring 2027 or the 2027-28 academic year is now open. Faculty from all colleges and disciplines are encouraged to submit.
Proposal deadline is Monday, October 13, 2025.
In the workshop, a panel of faculty who have taught honors seminars will share their experiences and advice. Faculty will learn about pedagogy, expectations, and best practices to support proposal development. This will include tips and suggestions to maximize the chance of your proposal being chosen in the competitive proposal selection process.
The UHP’s vision is centered on developing students into global citizen scholars who lead innovative efforts toward solving the world’s complex problems. Honors seminars are critical to achieving this vision.
UHP honors seminar courses need to be both intellectually rigorous and representative of the holistic mission of the program. The UHP is quite different from most honors colleges and programs. In other programs, high-achieving students are typically required to complete advanced courses and maintain a certain GPA. The UHP furthers this with a strong focus on experiential learning and reflection as well as a focus on the individual student’s goals and aspirations.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the UHP’s vision and how honors seminars are critical to its implementation.
- Identify the key components that make honors seminars unique from other courses.
- Understand the criteria that are utilized to review honors seminar proposals.
- Utilize the experience of faculty on the panel to inform their honors seminar course proposal development.
- Identify strategies to implement experience-based learning and reflection into the honors seminar course.
- Begin or continue development of their honors seminar course proposal.
