This workshop aims to provide a supportive space to practice facilitating conversations on controversial topics in the classroom considering the increased oversight of the state through Senate Bill 1. Participants will explore strategies for navigating a range of potential case study scenarios—both planned and unplanned—where controversial topics arise during instruction. Through small group conversations, workshop attendees will have opportunities to discuss, share experiences, and practice facilitating challenging conversations. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of the legislative context and increased confidence in navigating controversial topics that respect intellectual diversity and present the prevailing views and research in your field.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the impact of SB1 on classroom discussions involving controversial topics;
- Describe strategies for preparing and facilitating discussion on controversial issues that respect intellectual diversity and present the prevailing views and research in your field;
- Assess classroom case study scenarios and practice implementing facilitation strategies in a collegial setting;
- Identify personal strengths and areas for growth in confidence in facilitating conversations in the new legislative environment
