A 3Practices circle a practice session for the skills of careful listening, curiosity, and succinct expression of our questions and thoughts, particularly in the presence of difference. No one is called upon; the dialogue depends on volunteers to take two minutes to speak without interruption in response to the circle's "frame", followed by a round of clarifying questions from the rest of us. Clarifying questions must begin with the words, "I'd be curious to know...". The speaker then has up to one minute to respond to each question. This quick preview video offers more about what to expect; as referees, we’ll share additional details at the start of our time together.
Our frame for this circle is: A time when a hard conversation did (or did not) go well is... (3Practice Circle)
All that’s needed is your full presence and willingness to embrace the three practices:
- Be unusually interested in others
- Stay in the room with difference
- I'll remember that what I see of you is only part of who you are, and I'll refrain from comparing my best with your worst.
